The wrestling program was part of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Conference, otherwise known as the, from 1957 through 1962. In 1963-1966, EMU wrestling switched conferences to the Presidents' Athletic Conference. Since the exit of the PAC conference, EMU has been a part of the Mid-American Conference (MAC), starting in 1973.

David Bolyard is in his second year as head coach after taking over for former head coach Derek DelPorto in 2014. David Bolyard attended in 2000 and graduated from CMU. David Bolyard was an All-American his junior year, a four-time national qualifier, receive All-American honors, and broke a school record by winning 21 straight matches. David Bolyard was awarded the Chick Sherwood Award, which was presented to CMU's most valuable wrestler. David Bolyard ranked seventh all-time with 109 career wins and is tied for 10th with 22 falls in CMU history. David Bolyard was a 3x runner-up and a 2005 MAC champion at 165 lbs.

Davis Bolyard came to EMU in 2007 as an assistant coach, hired by former head coach, Derek DelPorto. Assistant coaches There are currently two assistant coaches on the wrestling team at EMU. One of two, Luke Smith, joined EMU in 2011. Smith graduated from in 2008. Luke is a 2x Mid American Conference Champion, 4x NCAA Division 1 National Qualifier, placed 4th at the 2004 Greco-Roman Olympic Trials, and 4th at the 2006 Sr Freestyle World Team Trials. The other is graduate assistant, Scott Mattingly.

Scott Mattingly graduated from in 2014. Mattingly was a national qualifier in 2013. All-Americans.

EMU Shuts Down Wrestling Twitter In a gut punch to the online legacy of the wrestling team since 2011, EMU didn’t just make a final post indicating the team was cut. It shut down the twitter account associated with the EMU Wrestlers. By taking this action this removes some great content the University created over the last 7 years. It also makes it kinda awkward when we get EMU Wrestling reinstated, they will need to track down all that old content and apologize to their student athletes and alumni.

His short involvement has tragically enabled him to have very little connection with the legacies built at EMU far before his tenure. Scott was the one crying at the formal announcement.

The official statement is here: Eastern Michigan University announced today, March 20, that it will reduce its intercollegiate athletic program by four sports, effective at the end of the 2018 spring season. The action is being taken as part of the University’s overall budget restructuring efforts. Affected by the decision are the sports of softball, men’s swimming and diving, women’s tennis, and wrestling.

With the change EMU, which previously led the MAC with 21 sports, will now have 17 sports (seven men’s sports and 10 women’s sports). This action in no way impacts Eastern’s affiliation with the Mid-American Conference (MAC). The move affects 58 male student- athletes and 25 female student-athletes, and once realized an expense reduction of approximately $2.4 million.
