As of this version, Backup and Sync won’t start on OS X 10.9 Mavericks. Older versions of Backup and Sync still run on 10.9 Mavericks, but are no longer supported. Users will be prompted to upgrade to 10.10 Yosemite or newer.

Fixed an issue where users couldn’t disable context menu items on macOS. Fixed an issue where some USB devices weren’t detected by Backup and Sync. Introduced a clearer error message for files that can’t be copied. Additional bug fixes and performance improvements. May 22, 2018 — Dropped support for OS X Mountain Lion (3.42.9747.1898). As of this version, Backup and Sync will not start on OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion.

Older versions of Backup and Sync still run on 10.8 Mountain Lion, but are no longer supported. Users will be prompted to upgrade to 10.9 Mavericks or newer. Backup and Sync will no longer ask to sync deletes of metadata files within Apple Photos libraries. Fixed an issue where the Windows 10 April 2018 Update caused Backup and Sync to lose its configuration settings, forcing users to sign in and reconfigure Backup and Sync. The case of a customer folder is now preserved when reading from usersetup.config. Additional bug fixes and performance improvements. April 17, 2018 — HEIF and HEIC file support (3.41.9267.0638).

Fixed an issue where HEIF and HEIC files (High Efficiency Image Format files) were not visible in Google Photos. Users who previously synced all file types, however, still won’t see their existing HEIF and HEIC files in Google Photos. Fixed an issue where some users were not able to add additional folders to sync. Users can now choose to sync subfolders of /Library on macOS and%UserProfile% AppData on Windows.

Problems With Lion Versions Supported

An exception is that subfolders of /Library/Application Support/Google and%UserProfile% AppData Local Google can’t be selected. Fixed an issue where some native applications did not appear in the list of available applications to open files with when browsing Drive on the web. Fixed an issue on macOS High Sierra where users experienced a delay in seeing recently taken screenshots on their desktop. Increased responsiveness when deleting photos that could not be converted to High Quality. Fixed an issue causing sync status icons to not appear for some users on Windows. March 19, 2018 — Bug fix release (3.40.8921.5350). Fixed an issue where Backup and Sync crashed with error 22E46FB1.

March 14, 2018 — Windows 64-bit support (3.40.8839.2105). Backup and Sync now distributes as a 64-bit executable on Windows. If your operating system is 64-bit, Backup and Sync will upgrade to 64-bit seamlessly. Backup and Sync will continue to run as a 32-bit process on 32-bit systems. When copying a link to your clipboard, Backup and Sync now displays a dialog with the current link sharing setting.

Fixed an issue on macOS where Backup and Sync crashed when a synced file had emojis in the file name. Fixed issues where Backup and Sync crashed with error EF31B9F9 or B3FD5B23.

Problems With Lion Versions Support Dates

You can now sync photos and videos to Google Photos and Google Drive from network-attached storage (NAS) devices. To start syncing, mount the network device to your Mac or PC. In the “My Computer” section of the Backup and Sync Preferences, click Choose Folder. Select the mounted folder or subfolder, and click Open. Network folders sync periodically only while mounted on your computer.

Problems With Lion Versions Support

You can now exclude Apple Photos Library metadata from syncing. In the “My Computer” section of the Backup and Sync Preferences, click Change. Select Back up photos and videos, and uncheck Back up Apple Photos Library metadata. When unchecked, only photo files from your library are backed up. When checked, your entire Apple Photos Library is synced to Google Drive. Introduced more safeguards to protect from database corruption. Fixed issues where files were locked when saving from Adobe and Microsoft Office applications on Windows.

Fixed an issue where after upgrading to Windows Fall Creators Update, Backup and Sync was not able to locate Documents, Desktop, and other folders. Fixed a broken link in “Can’t sync” error dialogs. Fixed an issue where Backup and Sync crashed with error 6EF4E317 when trying to sync. Fixed an issue where users were erroneously signed out. More bug fixes and performance improvements.

December 11, 2017 — Choose file types (3.38.7642.3857). You can now switch between syncing all files and folders versus photos and videos only. In Backup and Sync Preferences, click Change in the “My Computer” section to choose which files sync. You can now ignore files by extension.

In the “My Computer” section of Backup and Sync Preferences, click Change Advanced settings, and then enter the file extensions to ignore. Note that this applies only to directories on your computer, not to the “My Drive” folder. You can now right-click any folder and select Sync this folder to start syncing that folder to Google Drive.

Users are now notified when Backup and Sync can’t convert photos to high quality. Fixed an issue where multiple copies of the executable were being created in Windows. Fixed an issue where quitting Backup and Sync was taking a long time. More bug fixes and performance improvements.

November 6, 2017 — Bug fix release (3.37.7411.4599). Critical CPU bug fixes and performance improvements. October 30, 2017 — Multiple account support (3.37.7121.2026). You can now sign in to Backup and Sync with up to 3 accounts. From Backup and Sync, click Settings Add New Account. Users should now see fewer duplicate photos and videos in Google Drive. Users can now sign in from an external browser in order to use security keys.

Bug fixes and performance improvements. September 11, 2017 — High DPI support (3.36.6721.3394). Added support for High DPI and Retina displays.

Added support for FAT32, APFS, and REFS file systems. The Backup and Sync window now shows upload and download percentages, and the time each item was synced. If you quit and reinstall Backup and Sync, it now reconnects local folders to their cloud targets instead of creating new folders. Bug fixes and performance improvements.
