Just Updated To Itunes 12.2.1 For Mac
Has iTunes locked you out of your own music for DJing with? Update to 12.2.1, delete the offending files, and download them again from iTunes Match – all should return to normal. Following our, not least because it was locking some of them out of their own collections in their DJ software, Apple has rushed out an upgrade that appears to have fixed this main issue. Our tester Terry 42 has been experimenting with 12.2.1 since it dropped last night and reports: “The most important bugfix is that iTunes Match now works with Apple Music again. Your existing non-DRM songs will now be flagged as either ‘own music’ or ‘iTunes matched’ and stay DRM-free. Only downloaded songs from Apple Music will of course be under DRM (similar to Spotify) and be flagged as ‘Apple Music’. “I signed up for a new trial of Apple music today after the upgrade and everything seems to work fine so far.

I even deleted some songs on my MacBook and re-loaded them from iTunes Match and they are still DRM free and playable in Serato.” The issue was that that when people had used iTunes Match to keep their music in the cloud but then signed up to Apple Music, iTunes was incorrectly treating those songs as new Apple Music files, and adding DRM to them, meaning they would no longer play in DJ software. This is what has thankfully now been fixed. But for DJs, the second part of it remains: There are issues with the integration of iTunes into DJ software. Playlists and sub-playlists are not coming across properly nested, messing up organisation.
Happily, we’ve spoken to several software providers, who say this is something that is relatively easy to fix, so it looks like we can expect to see working again properly in all the main DJ programs sooner rather than later. Until that point though, we still recommend you remain on 12.1. So iTunes Match and Apple Music now play nicely together and DJs can at least access their tunes again in their DJ softwarebut we still recommend you hold off from upgrading. What can we learn from this as DJs? ITunes 12.2, as we said in our original article on this whole issue, may yet prove to be a good thing, as for music discovery, it’s throwing down the gauntlet to Spotify, Google Play Music All Access etc.
But the moral is: Turn off auto updates for your software, and only update anything important to your work – be it DJ software, music library software, or other mission-critical apps – after all the kinks have been ironed out by other people. It’s also worth pointing out that iTunes has become a complicated product. Sure, you can turn stuff on and off, and set the preferences to get it to do what you want, but many users aren’t ready to experiment and work out these nuances, and Apple has been particularly bad in this update in “keeping it simple” with Apple Music. (Indeed, a nother part of what 12.2.1 is doing is labelling files to make it easier for the layperson to work out what’s going on.) But if you’re going to rely on something like this, it really does pay to work out for sure what going on “under the bonnet”, to minimise the chance of nasty surprises. Need a fix? On Apple’s site will tell you how to get your music playing again. Have you updated to iTunes 12.2.1 yet?
Has it solved issues for you? Please let us know in the comments. Phil, you ask what can we learn from this episode. I agree with your conclusion that we should be generally suspicious (paranoid!) about upgrades of key components of our workflow. We need to be very careful, for sure.

I do not think that conclusion leads me to the “happy place” I’d like to be in as a DJ. Let’s face the sad fact that Apple doesn’t give a fig about DJs or what we do. Unfortunately virtually every piece of DJing software is completely locked into iTunes. This makes you a captive to Apple’s profit model where iTunes works to Read more ». Sounds like more conspiracy theorist rationale to me. Apple doesn’t “force” you, the DJ software doesn’t “lock” you, it provides the option to do so.
I know dj’s who work without iTunes, I watch them move their files manually into their software, and personally I wonder why, but that’s their chosen option. I’ve observed some manually do so when their chosen software will access it via the library.
Perhaps in reality they haven’t read the first few pages of the manual. I rarely buy anything from iTunes, I’ve been using it for over 10 years, I much prefer to have Read more ». For what it’s worth: I just upgraded to a new MacBook Pro that, naturally, came with iTunes 12.2.1 pre-installed, so I had to downgrade to iTunes 12.1.2 as I describe below. DISCLAIMER: I’m only describing below the process I used. I am not an expert and do not pretend to know whether this could work for anyone else. I’m just telling my own story. Use this story as you wish.

Bear in mind the following: I keep my iTunes Music Library on an external drive, and have not one but two backups on two other external drives that I clone Read more ». Hi all First post so please be gentle. Just signed up for the scratch course and have been (unusually for me) taking my time setting up my kit (IPad air, Beatpad 2, Djay 2). Just finished a reinstall of my iTunes (latest version across all devices) yesterday so I can import all my rare grooves and play on the IPad. However having a test play last night looks like half of the tunes have been replaced with dodgy iTunes own versions.
Eg a 12 minute extended version now plays as a 4 minute recent remix (and is bloody awful). However Read more ».

I'm in the process of migrating from an old Windows 10 laptop to a new one. I am attempting to download and install iTunes on the new machine, and when I try to run the downloaded.exe, I get an error message that this app can't run on this version of windows. The new laptop has Windows 10 1607, running Defender. Not much else installed at this point. I did have trouble getting the iTunes download and eventually found it worked if I used my iPhone's hotspot rather than my regular satellite ISP.
I downloaded via Firefox to the Download folder. I am trying again through the Edge browser. It is the 64 bit version I am downloading, not sure what the problem is. I have version 12.5.1.21 on the old laptop and am attempting to install 12.5.2 on the new one. I am not willing to do a third download of this nature on my iPhone's data plan, but I do consider iTunes an essential item, as I have backups of several devices on my Windows PC's and these are documents I cannot afford to lose. What am I missing here, or is this a case of the big software giants not playing nicely together again?
I have an installer file for iTunes 12.3.x on the old laptop. Should I just copy it to the new laptop and try running that and if that works, just update it? (Not that THAT process always goes so gracefully either.I often run into situations where Apple programs won't update on the Windows platforms because of digital signatures or something.).
